Corporal Austin Fenn, Co. H., of the 10th Vermont Infantry describes the Thanksgiving meal…
“The state of New York has furnished turkeys and chickens for the army to have a Thanksgiving.”
“Company H got three good size chickens for their dinner. They are neither singed, beheaded, gutted, or cooked, but I guess old Newman, our cook, will fix them so we can make a way with them somehow.”
At Cedar Creek:
“THE REBELS DID STRIP SOME OF OUR DEAD THAT DAY… LOREN PEASE HAD A ‘HAIR-BEARTH’ ESCAPE IN THAT BATTLE. I WILL TELL YOU BUT I DON’T CARE TO HAVE IT MADE PUBLIC…”
Fenn goes on to relate a story about Pvt. Pease “disappearing” and having a ball shot in his blanket! Fenn also states, “I HAD A BALL THROUGH MY CAP THAT DAY, BUT IT DIDN’T HURT ME.”
