Avenger Brownell SIGNED CDV

Beautiful pose of Francis E. Brownell, “Ellsworth’s Avenger.”  Brownell killed James T. Jackson on May 24, 1861 after the ladder had killed Ellsworth.   Brownell served in Company A. of the 11th New York Fire Zouaves.  He was quickly promoted to 1st Lt. and toured the Country eliciting patriotism.  The CDV for sale here is by Gurney & Son, N.Y. “in aid of the U.S. Sanitary Commission at the New York Metropolitan Fair, April 1864.”  On the reverse, in large bold ink is signed “Frank E. Brownell, U.S.A.”  A beautiful piece in excellent condition!
