Antietam Aftermath - Harrisburg, PA. - Pottstown Ladies to the Rescue!

Here is a great Antietam related order sent by Pennsylvania Militia General Hale stationed in Harrisburg (signed by his secretary Eli Hifer) written to the Postmaster in Pottstown.

Harrisburg September 18/62

Postmaster Pottstown –

The number of wounded in Gen. McClellan’s recent battle
is very large.  Most of them will probably be brought into
Pennsylvania.

The Surgeon Genl. appeals to the Ladies for the immediate
distribution of such articles as are needed for their comfort.  All
packages should have contents marked outside and be addressed
to
Gen. Hale Harrisburg

        Signed Eli Hifer

Postmaster will please have the above in some conspicuous place
and circulated as quickly as possible.

Condition is very good with one line partial separation.
