Private Charles F. Bixby enlisted when he was eighteen years old in the 2nd U.S. Cavalry. The 2nd U.S. were “Regulars” and at the start of the war wore the orange-trimmed uniforms of the 2nd U.S. dragoons. Bixby was severely wounded in the left arm on 6/12/1864 at Trevillian Station, Virginia. Bixby’s arm was amputated and his stencil, which was probably in his knapsack, was lost. The stencil is solid (many stencils are so fragile that they cannot even be handled). There is some medal lost in the bottom right hand corner, not affecting the lettering. The stencil reads, “C. F. BIXBY, Co. M 2nd U.S. CAV.” At Trevillian Station, the Cavalry under Sheridan fought Confederate General Wade Hampton.
