AMERICANA
If you want a nice example of a Confederate adversity cover that will display well, this one is hard to beat! The cover is light green and made from a book printed in Charleston in 1861, “War Finance: A Plan Proposing to Meet the Governmental Expenditure During the War, Upon a Cotton Basis, While the Crops Remain Unsold and Left Upon the Plantations of the South.” In Crandall’s listing of Confederate Imprints, he lists it as No. 2876 of which only 2 known copies are listed! It is quite an exotic usage of the title page, removed and used out of lack of paper to make an envelope. The other (addressed) side has a Confederate .10 cent 1863 issue blue stamp cancelled with a manuscript “X”. The cover is addressed to Rev. James DeVotie, Columbus, Muscoga County, Georgia. Very fine condition for an adversity cover!
