Davis was shot in the head while his sword was in his hand.  Lieut. R. O. Allen of the 6th Virginia Cavalry killed Davis at the battle of Brandy Station (also called Beverly Ford) on June 9th, 1863… the largest Cavalry battle ever fought on U.S. soil!   There is a nice wood cut in Harpers Weekly of Davis and a find article in the October 1990 issue of Blue Grey Magazine.
