COMMEMORATING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CIVIL WAR WITH

THE FINEST ORIGINAL SOLDIER'S LETTERS AND ARTIFACTS
7th New Hampshire Famous Assault on Battery Wagner - GLORY!

This letter – actually two letters – comes from author Wiley Sword’s collection.

Corporal Levi Miller of the 7th New Hampshire Infantry tells how he
nearly lost his ‘privates’ in the famous assault across the beach
at Battery Wagner.
This war during the forlorn attack of July 18, 1863,
led by Col. Robert Gould Shaw
of the 54th Massachusetts,
as depicted in the movie Glory.”

The first letter written August 18th, 1863 from Beaufort, South Carolina.  It is four pages in pencil and gives a rare firsthand account of the slaughter in the assault on Battery Wagner.  This letter comes with the envelope it was sent in.

The second letter is written in ink from Fort Schuyler, New York on November 30th, 1863, where Levi is recovering from his wound suffered in the assault.  My wound does not get any better… I am afraid that I shall lose the use of my leg.”  This letter also comes with the original cover.

Author Wiley Sword wrote an article on these letters featured in Blue & Grey magazine in 2008 and of course that article is included in this purchase – see photos below.

Condition of both letters is very good with some age spotting.
