Soldier’s Letter – Headquarters 76th Pennsylvania Volunteers, Hilton Head, S.C., October 2, 1862 – Endorsed by Col. N. W. Brown, Commanding the Post at Hilton Head & by Major General Ormsby M. Mitchel (Signed 28 days before he died!)
This 2-page letter has a column of endorsements on the reverse where Col. N. W. Brown “Respectfully transmitted” the request and then 2nd Lieut. Israel R. Sealy, 47th N.Y. Vols. writes: “Head Qrs. Dept. of the South, Hilton Head, S.C. Oct. 2/62”. Then, in the hand of Ormsby Mitchel “Respectfully referred… etc.” We include a sample of Mitchel’s autograph out of Jim Haye’s Autography book to prove it is in Mitchel’s hand… no question. Mitchel died of yellow fever on October 30th, 1862, just 28 days after signing this document!

An historic, yet inexpensive piece of history!
