Writing from Brooklyn, New York on April 29th, 1861, Major General Hiram Duryea issues orders to Lieut. Col. Burns (Col. Edward Burns of the 28th N.Y.) to march from the Arsenal at 3 o’clock A.M. precisely and take a boat at Fulton Ferry at 9 o’clock. The letter goes on to state that Burns will pass in review at the City Hall at 5 o’clock P.M. Duryea is very specific about this display of his colorful “Duryea Zouaves”. “No person of any rank will be let out of the building without the orders of the Brigadier General or Major General.”
This two page letter on light blue paper is written on separate sheets so could easily be framed with a picture of the colorful Duryea Zouaves as shown in Troiani’s book or a picture of Duryea himself. Condition of the letter is fine. It has many fold marks, but displays excellently.
