Confederate Postal History - "Camp of 5th N. Carolina, Snow 13 Inches" - George W. Wightman Addresses Cover to his Wife in Fayetteville, N.C. - CSA 1 Davis Stamp

We enjoy covers that “tell a story” and this one with that cute little description in the right top section of the cover says it all!  The writer Lt. George W. Wightman was a resident of Cumberland County, North Carolina.  He was commissioned in May of 1861.  The 5th North Carolina ran into heavy fighting in May of 1862 at the battle of Williamsburg, Virginia where they suffered over 300 casualties!  George survived to fight at Seven Pines and Gaines’ Mill but apparently had enough fighting and resigned on July 20th, 1862.

The cover has some staining and minor faults.  The stamp is an early CS1 (Green Davis).  The cancellation hard to make out but perhaps you can?
