COMMEMORATING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CIVIL WAR WITH

THE FINEST ORIGINAL SOLDIER'S LETTERS AND ARTIFACTS
59th New York I.D. Disc from Bellville, Ohio

Company H of the 59th regiment of New York Infantry was raised in Richland County, Ohio and the owner of our I.D. disc was Columbus C. Swanger.   He enlisted on March 15th, 1862 in Bellville, Ohio.  Columbus was engaged in the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Mine Run, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Sailors Creek.  He was wounded May 17, 1864 at the battle of Spottsylvania Court House.  Columbus’s brother, James, served as the Mayor of Bellville in postwar years.  The tag is the “War for the Union 1862” shield variety.

  On the reverse:
                                 “C. Swanger
                                        Co. H
                                           59
                                         Rgt.

An interesting tag for the Ohio or New York collector from a hard fought unit!
