Columbus was engaged in the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Mine Run, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Sailors Creek. He was wounded May 17, 1864 at the battle of Spottsylvania Court House. Columbus’s brother, James, served as the Mayor of Bellville in postwar years.
