COMMEMORATING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CIVIL WAR WITH

THE FINEST ORIGINAL SOLDIER'S LETTERS AND ARTIFACTS
4th Pennsylvania Cavalry - Best Description of Hardtack Worms!!

This 4 page letter in ink was written by Isaac Miller, Company C of the 4th Pa. Cavalry.  The letter is dated September 21st, 1864 and Isaac is writing his cousin Nathaniel Miller, who lived in Liberty, Tioga Co., Pa.  The letter comes with a .3 cent stamped cover and “Old Pointe Comfort” cancelation.

“Let me tell you that you are lucky that you stayed at home.  The water we use is not as
good as the water in your mud holes and the hardtacks full of worms.  Whenever I draw 3 or 4
I have to sit on my knapsack to keep the worms from running off with it…”

Isaac goes on to state that, “Further I will let you know that we fell back about a mile and a half yesterday.  We have to march today again how far I do not know.  There was hard cannonading all around us last night and this morning we can hear every volley they have at the Welden Railroad as plain as can be.  It is very warm here and the heat and dust almost kills us if we march.”

Isaac goes on to mention that he saw his friend John Weaver and that John was sent to the guard house because he wanted to go home (John Weaver of Company A, had just been mustered in on September 8th and would be killed on 2/6/65 at Hatcher’s Run, Va.).

Condition of the letter is fine with a number of stains on the envelope.  A cute letter to display with a piece of “wormy” hardtack!
