One of the neatest (and rarest) regimental stationaries used in the early part of the Civil War, when patriotism was at its peak, was that of the famous Pennsylvania Buck-tails! In the past 40 years we have only seen a small number of this stationary. Featured under a standing Buck-tail soldier holding his musket and a flag staff with the famous Buck-tail in his hat we read:
“We have come from the mountains,
We have come from the dales,
This our country’s flag we will sustain,
As long as our names are BUCKTAIL.”
The soldier, Charles F. Urban, Company H. of the 42nd Pennsylvania Infantry, enlisted in August 1861 and served in the famous Buck-tail unit until May of 1864. The letter is written from Camp Pier Pont and is dated November 17, 1861. Charles definitely writes like a Pennsylvania Dutchman and his spelling is hilarious, “I sink you wuld lick to no abut war.” He goes on to tell capturing 4 forts and 400 guns (“cons”). The best line is when Charles talks about a “shit of paper” that he sent his wife! Anyway, you’re not buying this one for the content, but that great imprinted stationary which will look fantastic in a display! Rare, Rare, RARE!
