MUSEUM QUALITY
AMERICANA
These 3 photos came from the scrapbook of a Civil War soldier stationed at Rock Island. Each original albumen has a paper mount and measures 3 ¼ x 4 ¼ inches. The three views are as follows:
1) Guard House, Engine House, & Commissary Department, Combined
2) Government Bridge
3) Issuing Store House
On the back of the bridge photo there is a printed description of how the bridge was built under the auspices of General Rodmen in 1869, then commanding the United States Arsenal on the island of Rock Island. Apparently this bridge replaced the one that was there in the Civil War? The other two photos, the Store House and the Guard House, apparently were there during the Civil War. We have not seen any other photos of Rock Island like these.
For the Illinois collector, these three photos make a great display of this important arsenal and prison!
