This one page letter written in ink on blue Confederate paper was written by Robert Powell Page, an Asst. Surgeon in the Stonewall Brigade, serving in the 2nd Virginia Infantry. Page is writing to give the details of “our darling Rob who fell mortally wounded near Middletown on that day”. Page refers to that day as “the memorable 19th of October”, which was the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia. The “Rob” who he is referring to is Robert Carter Randolph, a 1st Lieut. in Company C of the 2nd Virginia Infantry, who was from Millwood, Va. Page goes on to give a nice description of how the battle progressed and how Robert Randolph was killed. Page was a graduate of the University of Virginia Medical College.
My dear Tommy,
I have been wanting to write to you ever since the memorable 19th of October, (but have been
prevented until now) to let you know the fate of our darling Rob who fell mortally wounded near
Middletown on that day. He was struck in the centre of his forehead by a minne ball which
entered about an inch, and a half, Mord, and I stayed with him until after sunset when the
stampede commenced, and were then compelled to leave him. We tried our best to get him off,
but the ambulance was captured, he was then in a stupor, and couldn’t have lived long, and is
now no doubt in heaven where there is no war, pain, nor sorrow. I haven’t heard from Clarke
for two weeks, they were then all well, there is very little left in our poor little company now.
Carly Whiting was killed about ten days ago, Nat Cooke was badly wounded in the arm sometime
ago, but is now getting on quite well, Ranny H. and Key Meade are prisoners all the rest of your
friends are well. Please dear Tommy write soon by flag of truce, and let me know how you are
getting along. I hear that Cousin Anne and Evelyn have gone to Baltimore. E is still in very bad
health.
Direct to the care of Col. J. H. Carter
Army Valley District
Goodbye ever your devoted cousin,
R. Powell Page
The letter is in fine condition. Letters from the Stonewall Brigade are especially desirable.
