STOLEN 8/13/17 - 2nd Mass. - The Wife of Charles R. Mudge K.I.A. Gettysburg Presents Col. Cogswell  "A COLOR STAFF TO REPLACE THE ONE SHATTERED AT CHANCELLORSVILLE"

Mrs. Marie Louise Mudge writing on black-outlined MOURNING STATIONARY (her husband had just been killed at Gettysburg), writes to the Colonel who took her husband’s place.  The letter is also signed by the wife of the Adjutant John A. Fox.

"Boston August 7th, 1863

Col. Coggswell,
    Dear Sir,

        Permit us through you to
present to the noble Second Massachusetts Regiment of Infantry, a Color Staff to replace the one shattered at Chancellorsville.
The bravery of the dead & living of your
Command is the certain promise that the flag it is to bear will never be lost or dishonored whilst a man remains to defend it.

                       Respectfully & truly yours

                                 Marie Louise Mudge

                                          Feroline P. Fox"

The letter written in nice dark ink is in fine condition and would be a great companion piece to the document written by John A. Fox describing all the Colors and Staffs’.
