21st O.V.I. Cyrus & David Stoker K.I.A. Stone's River Grouping

Here is a very touching group of 6 items from Findlay, Ohio concerning the death of 2 of the 3 Stoker brothers.  The father, Jacob Stoker, sent all 3 of his sons off to war in Company F of the 21st Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry.  All 3 were shot at
the hard-fought
Battle of Stone’s River or Murfreesboro, Tennessee.  David P. Stoker was shot in the breast and died.  Cyrus H. Stoker was shot through the heart and killed instantly.  The 3rd brother, Darius, was shot and carried the bullet in his body until dying in 1908.

Our grouping includes 2 certificates, 1 for David and 1 for Cyrus paying the father Jacob the money that the Army owed the 2 boys.  The documents are dated in March of 1864.

Also included in the grouping is a small booklet of the bylaws Stoker Post No. 54 GAR, which was organized in April of 1881 in honor of Cyrus and David Stoker.

Next, is a G.A.R. ribbon, black with silver lettering, “In Memoriam, Stoker Post No. 54 G.A.R. Findlay, Ohio.  The ribbon has good metallic fridge at the bottom and celluloid colored pin at the top.  The ribbon is reversible and on the other side is a red, white and blue ribbon with gold lettering.

The fifth item is a 9 ½ x 12 ½ inch poster entitled “The Three Stoker Brothers at the Battle of Murfreesboro.” At the top there is a photograph of the David and Cyrus Stoker monument in Maple Grove Cemetery, Findlay, Ohio.  On the back of this poster is an article about the Colt Revolving Rifle that the 21st Ohio used!

Lastly, is the original legal sized envelope addressed to Jacob Stoker from the Treasury Department which the 2 1864 forms and checks were sent in.

Condition of items is overall very good with various faults, minor holes in the ribbon and staining/aging.

Our grouping would make a wonderful display for the Ohio collector or for the collector of great Civil War “story” items!
