Museum Quality Americana
A wonderful example of Charleston’s first slave tag made in the year 1800 by Robert Atmar. Atmar was a silversmith in Charleston and only made tags for the city in the year 1800 (that we know of). The Atmar tags are very rare and not found in the majority of collections. The last time we were at the Charleston Museum (oldest in the country) it did not have one in their slave tag display! This tag has a great patina with some green verdigris and is a strong tag with no holes or repairs. It is No. 183 and the occupation is Mechanic, one of the most desirable slave tag occupations (the slave owner had to pay a much higher tax for a skilled Mechanic than he did for a House Servant). At the top of the reverse, “Atmar” is strong and bold.
