1st Virginia Commission
He led the 1st Virginia in Pickett’s  Charge

This document is the official appointment of Frances H. Langley as Lieutenant Colonel in the famous 1st Virginia Regiment of infantry.  It is dated August 25, 1863 and comes just over a month after then major Langley was called upon to lead the Old 1st Virginia, part of Kemper’s Brigade, in Pickett’s Charge.

The document reads, “To rank as such from the 3rd day of July One-thousand eight hundred and sixty three.”  In other words, Langley received a battlefield appointment during Pickett’s Charge.  According to Charles T. Loehr, historian for the 1st Virginia, the 1st was taken into Pickett’s Charge by Colonel Lewis B. Williams.  “Colonel Williams at once mounted and wheeled in front of the regiment and was almost immediately struck down.  Then Major Langley took command; he was soon disabled.  Then Captain Norton took command with the same result.  Then Captain Davis jumped in front of the line and was bowled over almost immediately.  Then I remember we pushed up to the wall, and could almost see the Yankee gunners leaving their places and running in our lines for safety.”

Loehr’s complete account of Pickett’s Charge is included with this document.  The document is printed on Confederate blue imported paper and is signed by James A. Seddon, Secretary of War.  The Commission is 8 3/8  x  9 ¾ inches.  Condition is very good with a few minor aged spots.
