1st Rhode Is. Lt. Art. @ Gettysburg

CDV of Eben S. Crowningshield, a Bugler in the famous Battery B. of the 1st Rhode Island light artillery.  It was one of the cannons of Battery B. that was damaged by an exploding Confederate shell that killed two of its gunners and dented the muzzle of one of their Napoleons.  When the survivors tried to load the cannon, the round ball became stuck in the dented muzzle and could not be extracted.  This cannon became quite famous as a Gettysburg “Relic” and was displayed in a number of places throughout our country.  Crowningshield was wounded at Gettysburg on the second day.  A fine CDV with untrimmed but slightly bumped corners.  The photographer is S. B. Brown, Providence, Rhode Island.  The CDV is signed in ink on the reverse (on the light side), “Yours truly, E. S. Crowningshield.”
