A nice form written in the field requesting that Battery F submit their annual “Return of Casualties”. It is signed by 2nd Lieutenant Frank C. Choate, who later became Captain in the U. S. Color Troops.

Head Quarters 1st Pa. Lt. Artillery
Ft. Yorktown, Va. May 18, 1863
To the
Commd’g Officer
Battery “F” 1st Pa. Arty.
Sir:
I am directed by the Regimental
Commander, to request that you will please forward to these
“Head Quarters: the return of Battery “F” for the month of April.
Pa. 428 Army Regulations, requires Captains to make monthly
returns of their companies to Regimental Head Quarters, and
Commanders to Regiment to make monthly returns to the
Adjutant Generals Office, the latter cannot be made out unless
the former are regularly furnished, and the Regimental
Commander hopes that in future all the retunes and reports
required by the Army Regulations to be sent to Regimental
Head Quarters, will be promptly forwarded in order that the
Regimental returns and reports may be regularly completed –
and the records of the regiment correctly compiled.
The Annual Return of Causalities called for by Circular
from these Head Quarters, dated January 25, 1863 has not yet
been received.
