Museum Quality Americana

1st Maine Cav. Recruiting Poster and CDV

The 1st Maine Cavalry was one of the Unions finest Cavalry Regiments participating in 36 major battles in addition to many scourges.  On June 9, 1863 there was a key player in the Battle of Brady Station, the first battle in the Gettysburg campaign and the largest Cavalry Battle ever fought on American soil with 17,000 met on horseback charging and counter charging with sabers drawn.  This Sept 21, 1861 recruiting broadside was from Portland, Maine with the recruiting headed up by Stephen Boothby.  About ten years ago, we were fortunate enough to find a CDV of Boothby being offered on E-Bay!   Boothby was severely wounded at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, VA. on 5/10/1864 and died on 6/5/1864.  The same view that we are offering of Boothby is pictured in the 1st Maine Regimental (see picture below).  The broadside measures 17 ½ inches wide by 24 inches high and is the perfect size for displaying with Boothby’s CDV.  The broadside has had archival work to strengthen the reverse and is in excellent condition!  The CDV is very fine with only a few age spots and no backmark.  A truly remarkable pair for the collector or museum who wants the best!
