Scarce Imprint Stationary

Here is a wonderful ALS from C. G. Memminger on “Confederate States of America, Treasury Department, Montgomery” stationary.   Montgomery was the first Confederate capitol and any “imprinted” stationary from there is very desirable!  Memminger is writing to South Carolina Governor Pickens, acknowledging his letter of recommendation for a Mr. Alexander to be appointed a Collector at Sabine Pass.  The letter is written in nice dark ink on just one side so that it is very frame-able.  The letter is in fine condition and was taken out of the Governor’s office in Columbia before it was burned!

My Dear Governor

Your letter of 13 Inst. recommending Mr. Alexander as
Collector at Sabine Pass is just received.  If the appointment

were in my hands, I would with pleasure take the gentlemen

you have named.  The Law places at Sabine a Deputy

Collector who is subordinate to the Collector at Galveston.  I

will refer your letter to him, and I would recommend the

friends of Mr. Alexander to apply for his nomination by

James Sorley the Collector of Galveston.  Had I known your

wishes, when Sorley was here, I would have executed them.

I will delay any confirmation to give you time.

Very truly yrs,

C.G. Memminger

Gov. Pickens
