19th Indiana Iron Brigade

Gettysburg Battle casualty report for the famous 19th Indiana Volunteers of the Iron Brigade.  Thomas Jefferson Crull (who liked to go by “Jefferson Crull”) writes a sobering report of the many casualties in his Company “B.”  Crull enlisted in July of 1861 and spent the full 3 years of his enlistment in this famous Regiment.  At the start of the Gettysburg campaign he was a sergeant, but when both Lieutenants in his Company went down on the first day at Gettysburg he received a battlefield promotion to second Lieutenant on 7/2/1863.  The letter is written in pencil, easily read and is in very good condition.  On the last page (Crull only writes on 3 pages) Crull’s little sister Sarah has practiced writing her name… this does not detract from the display-ability of Crull’s content.

Dear Mother,

I received your letter the other evening and was very glad to head from you and to hear that you was well.   I suppose that you have heard all about the great Battle of Gettysburg Pennsylvania.  Our regt, was engaged in it and lost two hundred and thirty nine men 239.  Our company lost 18 killed and wounded.  Our 2nd Leut. was killed and our first Leut. wounded.  We had five killed in our company and 13 wounded.  We have 10 men in our camp and 81 men in the regt.  and only 64 guns.  We lost over 11 hundred men in one day.  We were in the three days but we whipped the rebs good.  I was slightly wounded in the right hand but will be all right in a few days.  I am still with the regt.  I only went to the hospital long enough to have my hand dressed.  I will give you a list of the killed and wounded.
