16th Mass. - Ord. Sergt. Joseph S. Hills, Co. F - One of His "Custom-Made" Postally Used Covers

For those of you who like postally used covers that “tell a story”, here is a nice one.  Not too many soldiers had their own stationary made up, but 20-year-old clerk Joseph S. Hills, a resident of Boston, Mass., did.  In using his envelopes all the sender had to do was add his location at the bottom.  Our example has a nice 3 cent Washington stamp and Boston, September 4th postmark.  Hills would be wounded in May of 1863 at the battle of Chancellorsville, then killed almost exactly one year later in the battle of the Wilderness.

The cover shows some stains, two tears at the top and is missing the back flap.
