Great Story: Camp Ella Bishop [Lexington, KY.] - 112th Illinois Vol. Inf.
Civil War letter of Sgt. Bradford F. Thompson, Co. B, 112th Illinois Vol. Infantry, November 16, 1862,
reporting how during the recent Confederate invasion of Kentucky, a brave Lexington, KY. girl, Ella
Bishop, flaunted a Union flag in the Confederates’ faces, then in wrapping it around her body, refused
to give it up until death. Their camp was thus named “Camp Ella Bishop” in her honor.
The letter is written in nice dark ink on what looks to be some “borrowed” Confederate paper. For
collectors of letters that offer great human interest stories, this one is super! Fine condition, a great
Illinois letter!
