"Red Devil" Holding...

Yes, a Sharp’s Rifle!  George E. Williams Co. B, 5th N.Y. Infantry (Duryee’s Zouaves) enlisted on 7/21/1861 in New York City.  He was 24 years old when he became one of the fierce “Red Devils” as Don Troiani so aptly portrays in his painting.  After 6 months Williams was promoted corporal (1/9/1862), the rank that you see him in the CDV.  He fought with the fifth until 5/4/1863 when he went into another famous zouave regiment, the 146th N.Y.!  Disaster hit the 146th in the Wilderness Battle 5/5/1864 and Williams was both wounded and captured.

CDV signed both on the front and reverse.  Photographer is R.A. Lord and the presentation on the reverse reads “To Mr. W.F. Beers, with the compliments of his old friend corporal G.F. Williams, 5th N.Y. Vols., Oct. 7, 1862.”  Beers was a fellow New York City buddy who didn’t enlist until March of 1864, going into the 10th N.Y.  He too would be wounded in the Wilderness!

One small old stain on reverse, right side (could be cleaned) corners have bumps, one weaker than the others, but overall very fine and “content” rated 10 out of 10!
